You can ask ChatGPT about your customers, renewals and tasks, and have it answer from your real CRM data instead of guessing. This guide shows how to connect ChatGPT to XPI CRM in about five minutes, what to ask once it's connected, and how to fix the two problems people run into most.

What you get

Once ChatGPT is connected to XPI CRM, you can ask questions in plain language and get answers from your workspace:

  • "Which renewals this quarter are at risk, and why?"
  • "Give me an overview of Globex: health, open tasks and the last conversations."
  • "What's on my plate today?"
  • "Log a call with Initech: they want a pricing review next month. Add a follow-up task for Friday."

ChatGPT acts as you. It sees only what your XPI CRM role allows, it can't delete anything, and every change it makes shows in the record's History as made "via AI assistant", so your team always knows where an update came from.

Before you start

  • An XPI CRM account. If you don't have one yet, start free. Every feature is included and no credit card is needed.
  • A ChatGPT plan that supports custom connectors. OpenAI calls them plugins or custom MCP servers. Full access, including creating and updating records, is available on ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu. On Pro, connectors can read but not make changes. If your menus look different from the steps below, check OpenAI's help page for your plan.
  • The connector address: https://xpicrm.com/mcp

You don't need an API key. You sign in to XPI CRM in a browser window and approve the connection, so no password or key is ever pasted into ChatGPT.

Option 1: ChatGPT on the web

  1. Go to chatgpt.com, click your name and open Settings.
  2. Open Plugins.
  3. Click + and choose Add custom MCP server.
  4. Name it XPI CRM. Under Connection, paste https://xpicrm.com/mcp as the Server URL. Don't choose Tunnel; that's only for servers running on your own computer.
  5. Choose OAuth as the authentication method.
  6. Read OpenAI's warning about custom servers, click I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin.
  7. An XPI CRM window opens. Sign in, choose the workspace you want ChatGPT to use and click Approve.
  8. Start a new chat, switch on XPI CRM from the + menu and ask your first question.

Option 2: the ChatGPT desktop app

  1. Open Settings → Plugins and switch to the MCPs tab.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Name it XPI CRM and set Type to Streamable HTTP. The default, STDIO, is for programs running on your computer; XPI CRM runs online.
  4. Paste https://xpicrm.com/mcp as the URL. Leave every other field empty: no token, headers or environment variables.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Click the gear icon next to XPI CRM and choose Authenticate. Your browser opens the XPI CRM approval page: sign in, choose a workspace and click Approve.
  7. Start a new chat and ask your first question.

Check that it works

Ask: "Using XPI CRM, which renewals this quarter are at risk, and why?"

A working connection answers with real account names from your workspace, their renewal dates and values, and the reasons behind the risk, such as a falling health score, an overdue invoice or a detractor score. You can also confirm the connection in XPI CRM under Account → Connected apps.

Troubleshooting

"The XPI CRM tools aren't available in this chat"

This is the most common problem, and the fix is simple: start a new chat. A conversation keeps the set of tools it had when it began, so a chat you opened before connecting XPI CRM will never see it. Open a new one and ask again.

ChatGPT asks for an API key or a password

You're probably in a normal conversation asking ChatGPT to "connect" for you. ChatGPT can't add a connector from inside a chat; it has to be added once in Settings, as described above. Never paste a password or key into a chat.

The desktop app shows "Command to launch" and "Arguments" fields

The Type is still set to STDIO. Switch it to Streamable HTTP, and the form changes to a single URL field.

No sign-in window opened

Click the gear next to the server and choose Authenticate (desktop app), or remove and add the plugin again (web). If your browser blocks pop-ups for chatgpt.com, allow them and try again.

Good prompts to try

Copy any of these into a new chat once XPI CRM is switched on:

What's on my plate today? List overdue tasks first.
Which clients need attention this week, lowest health score first?
Give me a one-page brief for [client] before my call: health, renewal, open tickets, last three conversations.
Log a call with [client]: [what was discussed]. Add a follow-up task for [date].
Start the At-risk recovery playbook for [client].
How did ARR move month by month this year?

Keeping it safe

  • Same permissions as in the app. A view-only member can only read through ChatGPT too.
  • No deletes. The connector can create and update records, never delete them.
  • Everything is recorded. Each change appears in History as made via the AI assistant.
  • Easy to switch off. Disconnect any assistant in Account → Connected apps, and administrators can turn the connector off for the whole workspace in Setup → AI connector.

The same connector also works with Claude, Gemini, Grok, Microsoft Copilot, Cursor and VS Code. See the connection guide for each one.

Try it in XPI CRM

XPI CRM is the customer success CRM with health scores, renewals, playbooks and support tickets, and it works with the AI assistant your team already uses. Connect ChatGPT once and get answers about your accounts in seconds. Start free, with every feature included and no credit card, or browse the help guides first.
